Because that race doesn't even appeal to me. I'm not claiming that this is THE way to make it to the million the fastest.
Is there better ways of making money than selling and buying MTG cards? Most definitely! Would I be as entertained by them? Absolutely not. Because I simply wouldn't enjoy it like I do selling and buying MTG and managing my collection.
Trading stocks wouldn't do the same for me as selling and buying MTG cards. For me MTG is not just another horse I bet on to diversify investments across an extensive portfolio. I know a lot of people compare the two directly and the biggest difference between them and I is that I don't have money as a primary motivator. MTG speculation/selling/buying is not directly comparable to stock trading for me.
I think you forgot a very important factor in your calculation I'll try and elaborate from my own perspective, but I know I'm not the only one with it. But with very few copies left around that price and if this card does not get a reprint in the near future, I could imagine that my decision to blow almost 30€ a newly printed card might pay off. So far the card has almost doubled in price with a trend of 1.99€. It's now down to a mere 89 copies for sale, 65 of those english as mine. Getting picked up several times a week if not more. And this card has steadily declined in stock in the past months. Mono black is always popular, card has only one "B" in it's mana cost and is thus easily splashable. I pounced on it when I saw it was in A LOT of EDH decks (now 10K+). I saw this card and loved everything about it the art, the flavor, it being instant "mass" removal and it being the first printing of the card. Mostly as an impulsive, small spec as I mostly spec on old border foils - as mentioned. I paid a total of 27.5€ shipped for the cards. I bought 25 foil extended art Soul Shatter some time ago. That's at least the excuse I've made for myself in order to stray from my known path. So don't mind me! But no rule without exception a few newer cards I have bought 20-30-ish copies of, since these cards are printed heavily and are more easily obtainable for people compared to my preferred niche pre-8th foils. Both because I like to think that a patricular card should be in the possession of many and not few - regardless of the price, and also because I like to diversy on my "investments".
